Protection Island is a small island located 1.5 km north-east of downtown Nanaimo, BC, Canada.
Protection Island has its own micro climate similar to many of the Gulf Islands. The weather is balmy and sunny much of the time with little or no snow in the winter. There are several great swimming beaches and lots of good fishing spots. Sailing, power boating and kayaking is possible year round.
There is no car ferry to the island but there are private landing barges for bring over large items and construction materials. There are some cars but residents get around the island in electric golf carts and bicycles. However everything is close so most people walk. There are no paved roads on the little island and that is the way the Islanders like it. Locals frequently transport their groceries from the community dock with their own wheelbarrows.
Access to the island is by a regularly scheduled passenger ferry or by private boats. Some residents also commute by kayak or rowboat as well. (Some of this information is from Wikipedia)
